A Friend in Need
Update for Jeff on Thursday, May 10th @ 10:00 pm
Jeff had a wonderful birthday celebration tonight. Pam, his family and many of his closest friend were in attendance. I have enclosed a photos of his collection of birthday cards. It is so thoughtful of all of you who sent these lovely cards, photos, programs, gifts. Jeff also received a very special helmet from dear friend Randy Irish. This helmet was artfully created by Glen Cornell and purchased by Randy from a Meridian Speedway raffle winner last summer. A special gift in so many ways. Jeff is truly blessed to have all of you. Happy Birthday Jeff!

Update for Jeff on Tuesday, May 8th
Three days and counting until Jeff's birthday. Today during lunch, Pam and Mom were helping Jeff with all of his birthday cards that are beginning to roll in. We have representation from Missouri, California, New York, Washington and Ontario, Canada. Thanks so much and keep them coming. This is a very special and thoughtful gift from you all. We hope to post a picture of Jeff with his cards later this week.
We wanted to make you aware that Jeff's birthday is in three weeks - May 10th. Jeff really looks forward to the mail, especially receiving cards and letters. It would be amazing if he had a pile of birthday cards to open and read this year. Can you please help make this possible? Here is his address: Jeff Russell 1708 S. Curtis Road Boise, ID 83705 Please help to spread the word! And thanks for your ongoing well wishes to Jeff!!!
Update for Jeff on Tuesday, April 3rd @ 5:00 pm
Please pray for Jeff's speech to return and his overall health to be okay.
Thanks so much to all of you who supported and attended the benefit for Jeff at Fast Lane on January 21. Your donations of time, travel and dollars are very much appreciated and will be put to very good use as we continue with Jeff's therapy. I am sure you all noticed how happy Jeff was to see so many of you. It seems he gets quite used to seeing the same faces from day to day. We really believe that being around the friends that he does not see very often is a positive stimulus for him. If you have the time and would like to visit with Jeff, please contact Bob and Marilyn at

Update: Saturday, December 31 @ 3:00 pm
Its been quite a year . . . both difficult and rewarding. Jeff has progressed to a great degree compared to last year at this time. For this we are grateful! It is very taxing on those closest to him to help get him further and further along. But we must remember how much Jeff pushed himself to be at his best. Taking every little thing to the next level seems to be what it takes. We wish for much more progress, specifically with his speech for this new year. We also wish for each member of our family and Jeff's close friends to have the strength to see him through each day. We love him so much! We are wishing for all of you a very happy and healthy new year!!!
Update: Monday, December 26th @ 7:45 am
Jeff is blessed in so many ways. He is cared for very well by those closest to him. He is also the recipient of your generosity and well wishes. We cannot thank you enough!!! We want to take this time to wish you all a very Merry Christmas / Happy Hanukkah. Please cherish the time you have with your family and friends.
Update: Sunday, December 18th @ 5:15 pm
We celebrated Mom's 70th birthday last weekend. It was actually 7 days of celebration for Mom. A special week for a special Mom, who has been through a pretty tough year. Jeff had a good time, as well. Mom brought family photos and some of Jeff's drawings from our childhood, which is always fun to see. We are all looking forward to sharing the holidays together. Thanks for all of your special well wishes.

Update on Tuesday, November 29 @ 2:00 pm
We have so much to be thankful for this year. Jeff has come so far in 12 months. We had Thanksgiving dinner at Mom and Bob's today. The biggest smile of the day came when Jeff saw his niece, Mercedes. He loves her so much. Jeff was able to be with the group for a little over two hours. He tried to watch a little football. It is not so easy around a lot of people and the noise level is a bit distracting for him. It was great to be together this year. We hope you all had a nice day with your family and friends. Thank you for keeping Jeff in your thoughts and prayers.

Jeff's Recovery
Update on Sunday, October 30
It's been one year. We wish it would have never happened. However, we are so grateful that my brother has his life. He has come so far in one year. He meets with improvements each week. Some may choose to be sad today or maybe just reflective. I choose to be very thankful and will celebrate in some way. Jeff has the will and strength like no one I have ever known. He has the very best friends and fans. Jeff is so fortunate to have his immediate circle of his wife, family and friends by his side daily, weekly. Thanks to you all! Please send a cheer to Jeff today!
Update: Tuesday, October 4th @ 9:00 am
We see progress, although a little at a time. Jeff is fully engaged in his outpatient therapy at the Elk's Rehab. He really likes his therapy team. He is responding very well to suggestions, like opening his hand and doing is arm exercises. He is noticeably getting closer to getting those words out. He really wants to speak, and in time, we are very hopeful that he will get that ability back. Pam is caring for him 24/7. Mom is there to help out with Jeff, as well. It is not easy on either of them. Friends stop by to pay visits, which Jeff loves. Pam printed all 1288 get well messages from you and placed them in a binder. They are beginning to read each entry to Jeff. Your words will mean a lot to him. Thanks for your continued support and prayers.
Update: Sunday, August 28th at 3:00pm
Last night was a very special night for all of us . . . especially Jeff! It was the Jeff Russell Benefit Race at Meridian Speedway. Before the main events began, family and friends gathered on the track as Adam Nelson spoke of Jeff's life-changing event and remarkable progress over the past 10 months. Al Jr. and Mercedes drove Jeff out onto the track in a shiny, red convertible. People who have not see Jeff's since last year, were able to get a glimpse of him as they took a lap. Jeff was presented with the American flag which flew over Camp Victory in Iraq during Operation New Dawn. Very special!
We would like thank all of you in attendance at the races last night. Your generosity is overwhelming. In addition to a portion of the gate and all of the raffle ticket sales going toward Jeff's Benefit Fund, many of the evening's racers passed their helmets in the stands and collected even more money for rehabilitation expenses! One very special item up for auction was a custom helmet painted by Jeff's close friend, Glen Cornell. It is a piece of art really. TC Ellis won the helmet in the raffle, which was then purchased by Randy Irish for $500. TC turned around and donated the $500 to Jeff's Recovery Fund. Randy is now going to give the helmet to Jeff. You have big hearts, HUGE! Thanks Meridian Speedway Fans! Jeff felt the love last night. We simply cannot thank you enough.
Please see Bob's photos of the special evening in the link below . . .

Great News! Jeff is coming home tomorrow! I will have more details later, but wanted to let you all know as soon as the plans were solidified. We hope that Jeff can make a brief appearance at his benefit race at Meridian Speedway on Saturday night. Please try to make it to the races. It will be a special night, indeed. Another milestone! Partial proceeds will go to the benefit fund to help pay for Jeff's outpatient therapy, which is not covered by insurance. Thanks for your caring thoughts and support.

Update: Monday, August 22 @ 9:00 pm
What a wonderful event we attended yesterday to benefit Jeff's recovery fund! Randy and Crissie Irish hosted a 'larger that expected' show of Rods and Rides. We would like to thank Randy and Crissie for this amazing production. It was really the perfect setting. We all ate well thanks to the big heart and grill of John Toth from Tavern @ Bown Crossing. A special thanks to everyone who prepared and displayed their cars and bikes. It was quite an impressive collection. We had a long list of donated items that made for a great series of raffles. Your generosity is appreciated very much and we know how much everyone is enjoying their prizes. Denise and Lester - your support and love is never-ending . . . so a never-ending thanks to you both. Thanks so much to all of you in attendance on Sunday. It meant so much to see you all in support of Jeff. We hope you had a great time on such a beautiful day. Jeff would have loved it to no end. And he would have loved seeing all of you. Maybe we can do this again in the spring when he can be here with all of you.
For a recap of the day, please see the link below to access photos provide by Bob Cambou. Thanks Bob!

Update: Friday, July 22 @ 1:30 pm
Jeff will have his first family visit this weekend since being at "TBI Bootcamp" for the past month. We will have more details for you early next week. Here are some bits of information we have gathered so far. Jeff has a staff of people working with him for most of each week day. He has the weekends "off" and they will gradually begin to socialize Jeff . . . movies, grocery store, etc. He sometimes rejects his therapy out of stubbornness, not realizing that the staff is there to help him. It does not appear that this occurs very often. He probably gets frustrated in knowing what he wants to do, but not yet able to do it. He shares an apartment with two other patients. He has his favorite staff people, much like what we noticed in Boise. He is improving since being at this new facility. We will post more later. Thanks for checking in and for keeping Jeff in your thoughts and prayers.
Update for Friday, July 8th @ 7:00 am
It is not so easy to write updates for you since Jeff has relocated. We all miss him so much. Pam speaks with him each night on the phone. Mom and Al Jr have also spoken with him. The entire family will get a progress report from the facility next week. We are looking forward to that. It seems to be a great place and they are being very good to Jeff. He is getting along well with the other patients. He was helping to sweep, vacuum and put away dishes during his first week there. They seem to keep him very busy. On the weekends, he likes to lay out on the patio. At the end of this month, we can begin family-only visits. It will be exciting to see his progress. This is the best next step for Jeff. He is in good hands. We thank you for your continued support.
Update: Thursday, June 23 @ 2:00pm
Jeff was transported this week to a private traumatic brain injury rehabilitation facility in California. This has been in the works for some time. Al, Jr and Denise have been jumping through hoops with insurance company and the facility to get this arranged. The insurance company is not supportive, but we knew it was the best chance of a full recovery for Jeff, so we are moving ahead without them (for now). Jeff is essentially participating in "brain injury bootcamp." He cannot have family visitors for one month. This will allow the staff to focus on Jeff entirely. Jeff is so very lucky to be participating in the program. He was perfect on his flight down. He was immediately thrust into physical and speech therapy. Jeff spoke more in the first hour of his new speech therapy session than he did in 6 months in Boise. Jeff loves his new speech therapist. Ahhh, such a sigh of relief and continued hope! Your continued prayers and positive thoughts are welcome as Jeff progresses through this next phase of his recovery. We would like to thank Dr. Cox, Jeff's fav RN Tonya and the extensive staff at St. Al's TBI Rehab for Jeff's care over the past many months.
Update: Monday, June 13 @ 7:30 pm
Jeff has experienced a lot of progress over the past two weeks. He can really comprehend the actions and words of others. He is walking very well, but still with some assistance. He is getting words and phrases out with clarity. Sometimes, the words do not flow so easily and it frustrates him. We all just reassure him to keep trying to speak. Many of the hospital staff that have not seem him in a week are excited for these changes. It is really great to see him display confidence. Jeff's cousins, Brent and Mike, were here for the weekend. Brent promised Jeff lobster for lunch and delivered on the promise. Jeff was very happy to have a meal away from the hospital cafeteria. Mom and I have been making him special treats. He loves them. Some are concerned that he is going to get fat, but he won't. He burns a lot of calories on his walks and during PT. We are thankful for the healthy appetite and good physical movement. Jeff was very pleased today to learn that the tear in his lower eyelid will be repaired tomorrow. Slowly but surely, we move forward! Many thanks to you for your continued thoughts and prayers for Jeff. He is such a lucky man to have you all in his corner.
Update: Thursday, June 2 @ 10:00 am
Jeff is doing well and holding steady. He has subtle progressions. He is eating regular food now which is great for him. It seems he is ready to do much more. He tries so hard to speak and gets some words out. We hope that he can express himself fully very soon. It would be great if he could have constant physical and speech therapy each day, but that is not possible. Each of the family members do our best to encourage speech and walking, at least, but we can only spend so much time with him each day. I wish we could do more for Jeff. But again, recovery tends to be a long and slow process. Apologies for not posting for a while. It does not mean that anything is wrong with Jeff. I hope it does not keep you from think of and praying for Jeff. Thanks so much for checking in!
Update: Wednesday, May 18th @ 7:10 pm
It seems like Jeff made several leaps this week. Last night, he was literally walking by himself. He had Jeff Goade by his side to support him. But he had his balance and did great walking on his own. He also fed himself his entire dinner. He did not need any help from me! I usually scoop his food onto his spoon and he takes it from there. It is easier for me (and whoever else is with him at meals) and for him. I have let that assistance go on too long. He needs his independence with this task (and others). After dinner, we went to the gym so that Jeff could get in some activity on the stationary bike and the stairs. He enjoyed that additional activity that was beyond his daily physical therapy.
Tonight, he needed just a bit of support walking. He may have been a bit tired as he had been walking around most of the day. I noticed that his right leg seemed as strong and able as his left. This is such good progress! He also used his right hand more than I have ever seen to this point. Jeff has also been very good lately about taking his medication orally, rather that through his feeding tube. This has been a gradual process that sometimes frustrates him. Too many pills, it seems. Both nights, he was very willing to take each pill - one after the other. We want that feeding tube removed, as it must be very uncomfortable for him. He looked so good tonight. He was really calm, clear and alert. Some of his favorite hospital staff ladies were calling out his name as we walked around. He waved and gave them a big smile. He began to get tired, so we walked back to his room. He went straight to his sofa and tucked himself in for a little nap. We are so proud of Jeff. These leaps are the result of a lot hard work on his part. I really sensed that he felt confident tonight. Great for him!!! Just so you know, we shared your birthday wishes with Jeff last week. Thanks so much for thinking of him.
Update: Tuesday, May 10th @ 7:00 am
Jeff had a great weekend. He was able to get outside and walk around for a bit (with assistance). It was nice for him to get some fresh air and in a different environment for a short time. Our Mr. Houdini is at it again. Jeff sleeps in a veil bed that is a bit like a tent. It can be zipped up from the outside to secure him and help to insure his safety so that he does not fall out of his bed. He gets zipped in after about 11:00 pm each night and sleeps until 6:00 or 7:00 am. Monday morning, his nurse went in at 6:00 to check on him. Jeff had unzipped the "unzip-able from the inside" veil and had somehow walked himself to the sofa that is in his room. He was sound asleep on that sofa. He likes the sofa, but we didn't know how much! This incident shows more of his strong will. It also shows that more of his cognitive ability is present. He had to figure out how to escape the veil. I hope he can escape more than the bed veil and unzip himself all the way back to us someday soon. By the way, Jeff was born on Mother's Day, May 10th - forty seven years ago. I know he would appreciate your birthday wishes today.
Update: Tuesday, May 3 @ 7:30am
Jeff is so active lately. He really wants to walk a lot (still with assistance). He is also very curious about his surroundings. He peeks into other patients rooms just to see what is going on. He also wheels his way to a part of the building that has big windows. He looks intently at the traffic, buildings and the mountains. He is also trying to get words out. Yesterday he performed a new task. Linda, his CNA, asked him if he wanted to help her wipe down the tables. He shook his head. She handed him a disinfectant wipe and he proceeded to wipe down the dining room tables. Again - a little thing for most of us that just brought tears to my eyes as I watched. It is progress! Nice job brother!!! Thanks so much for your prayers and support.
Update: Sunday, April 24 @ 7:30 am
Jeff is wanting to become more mobile. He likes to walk after his dinner rather than just cruising around in his wheelchair. This has been going on for about a week (with two people assisting him). Yesterday, as he was eating dinner and he crossed his left leg over his right knee. He did this several times that night. Something new. Tonight Pam left Jeff with some fresh flowers, the sound of the ocean on a cd and his fan blowing on his bed. He likes the sound and coolness of the fan. After I finished having dinner with him, Jeff's RN, Tonya, and I took him to his bed. He laid down and soon wanted to get back up. We thought he wanted to cruise around before going to sleep. But instead, he walked (with our assistance) over to the fan. He sat on the sofa next to it and began adjusting the knob to keep it from oscillating. He wanted the breeze on him steady. He also adjusted the fan so it was blowing lower toward him. Tonya and I keep looking at each other in amazement. Something really new! Her words were "BAM!" as in new things are unfolding. Just wait and see! Have a very Happy Easter! Please hold Jeff in your prayers. Thanks for your messages and for checking in on him.
We would like to thank everyone who came out to the Jeff Russell Poker Benefit. You were all so generous with your time and donations. It was a good turnout and it appeared everyone had a Great time.

Update: Friday, April 15 @ 6:00 am
Jeff had his bone flap (skull bone) replaced last week. He was only is ICU for one day, as he was ready to get out of there. He seemed to recover fairly quickly, given it is a such an invasive procedure. His meds had to be adjusted to fight off possible infection. It will take a while for the incision to heal and its a bit itchy right now for him. This week has been good for Jeff. He has had more movement in his right arm, which he typically holds very close. He was looking at a digital picture frame that Bob put together for him. When he was finished looking at it, Mom heard him say, "shut it off." That was a very intentional phrase. Especially since he is not yet speaking fully. I would like to ask if we could all pray for his skull and brain to heal, his right arm to move freely and without pain and for Jeff to get his voice back. I know he would be very appreciative!
Bonnie Cornell

Update: Sunday, April 3 @ 8:15 pm
Jeff seems to be getting more assured in his actions and more responsive to questions. It seems that the tasks he performs are getting smoother. I certainly notice this with his eating. Speaking of eating . . . Jeff has gained 9 lbs!!! Pam and Mom were able to take Jeff outside on Friday, as it was 70 degrees in Boise. He seemed to really enjoy that. I was with him on Saturday and he got a bit trapped in his wheelchair, as three nurses were trying to "help" him. He got frustrated and said "Jeeeez" just exactly like I used to hear his say to me from time to time. This is a good thing because his speaking words are not that frequent. I am so hopeful that Jeff knows everything that is going on around him, but he just needs more time to put it all together. We really enjoy reading your great get well notes. Thanks so much for checking in on Jeff.
Update Thursday, March 31 @ 6:00 am
Jeff is doing well - having a steady week. Pam was home ill for a period of time. She is feeling better now and Jeff is happy to have her back to spend time with him. The hospital staff comments on how lucky Jeff is to have various multiple family members with him thoughout the day, every day. No doubt we are the lucky ones! Thanks once again for checking in on Jeff.
Update: Friday, March 25, @ 6:45 am
Al Jr. and I had dinner with Jeff tonight. He feeds himself now. As I mentioned before, he loves his food. He is now off of the tube feedings because he is eating so well. I think he has gained about 4 lbs. At this stage in his recovery, Jeff is fairing very well. He is getting some strength back. He can also get agitated, which we try to minimize. We have also discovered that Jeff favors his female "sitters" vs. the guys. Knowing he is not on the top of Jeff's list, his sweet sitter Ben says, "That Jeff is a ladies man." Who knew?! Thanks for checking in on Jeff. Your prayers and thoughts are so appreciated.
.
The world lost a wonderful woman. Bonnie Cornell lost her battle with cancer last week. To those that new her, she was a very sweet and kind woman. To know her was to love her. Glen and Bonnie were married last week where a small group of friends and family witnessed the marriage. Jeff attended the wedding as Bonnie was in the same hospital. Glen organized a wonderful memorial that was held Saturday at the Elks in Nampa. Over 250 friends and family showed up to honor Her life. She is going to be really missed.

Jeff's Recovery - Mar 13
Update:Sunday, March 13 @ 7:30 pm
Jeff had a very productive weekend which consisted of wheel chair mileage and slightly assisted walks around the hospital. He really seems to want to do for himself. He has been eating three pureed meals per day. He is almost feeding himself. He wheels to the sink to wash his hands after lunch. We are really looking forward to the day when he can recover his speech fully. We know he has things to say but he just cannot quite get it out yet. His friend Drew showed him the OF Racing calendar today. Jeff went through it several times. He seems very interested in reviewing pictures that are applicable to him. Traci is going to put together a photo album for Jeff which I am sure he will enjoy. Thanks once again for your thoughts toward Jeff. He has come so far and really needs your prayers and positive thoughts to come his way.
Jeff's Recovery 2
Update: Tuesday, March 8th @ 5:30 pm
Pam and I sat with Jeff as he ate lunch today. He fed himself for the most part. From the beginning of the meal to the end, he made progress. I realized how we take for granted the little things everyday. And when I watch Jeff accomplish these small but huge tasks, it brings such hope for his recovery. Jeff has some obvious hospital staff favorites. His doctor mentioned that his recognition and acknowledgement of this particular person is a positive signal of having short term memory. This tends to be an issue with TBI patients. This is a good sign for Jeff.
Over the weekend, Jeff had a nice long walk with Ray and Judy around the hospital. . . some new territory. Goade and Jeff put more miles on the wheelchair. . . more new territory. You see, Jeff is suppose to stay on his floor. But sometimes he just makes his way beyond those four walls.
On a very special note, our friend Bonnie Bishop is not well. Bonnie and her love of ~22 years, Glen Cornell were married in the hospital on Friday. Glen was a member of Jeff's pit crew. With his doctor's approval, Pam was able to take Jeff to Bonnie's room for their wedding. This certainly meant a lot to his friend, Glen. May God bless Bonnie and Glen!
Update: Thursday, March 3,@ 9:00pm
It was a very good day for Jeff. He walked about 1000 ft. He is up 1.5 lbs since he has been getting some real food. The highlight of his day was a visit by his niece Mercedes and by Max the Therapy Dog. Pam recently brought in music for Jeff, after learning that it played a role in Gabby Giffords' speech therapy/recovery. Thanks for all of your great messages. We really appreciate your prayers and positive thoughts.
Update: Monday, Feb 28 @ 6:00 am
It has been a steady week/weekend for Jeff. He has progressed with his physical therapy by walking around with very little assistance. He walks for longer periods now. He also zips around in his wheel chair. They are getting his food / tube feedings figured out. He LOVES to eat and really looks forward to his meals. I spoke with a "sitter" last night. She commented on his progress. She also said that miracles are made here and she has seen plenty of them. We know that Jeff is already a miracle. But please know that even with his amazing progress since October 30, the road to recovery is a long one. It just is! The brain heals in its own time. Jeff's responsiveness is certainly encouraging and your prayers and support are needed every step of the way.
I used to post updates everyday because in his critical stage, we did have information daily that was important to share. Jeff now is stable and going through his rehabilitation. There is good progress and there are also slight peaks and valleys, which should be expected. We continue to have our vision of his full recovery. That is why your 'get well' posts are so helpful to Jeff and to all that check this site. Most recently and moving forward, I will be providing updates to you twice per week. With that, I should be able to report new developments. I hope to get something out on Thursdays and Sundays - - - give or take. I want these updates to be meaningful and not just words (for the sake of posting something everyday) because this is my way of helping my brother right now - its my gift. I hope you understand and we are encouraged if you stop by each day to send him a note and check other messages. Thanks so very much!
Update: Wednesday, Feb 23 @ 8:45 pm
I had dinner with my brother last night. Jeff enjoyed a full meal of pureed foods. He was able to drink from his glass of milk without any assistance. I could tell that he really enjoyed being able to taste food again. After dinner, he cruised around in his wheelchair. He wondered into the computer room. I asked him if he wanted to see his website. I pulled up
www.ofracing.com and read him three of your get well wishes. He was a bit sleepy and wanted to get back to his room. I hope you know how valued your messages are to all of us. Thanks so much for your prayers and positive thoughts.
Update: Thursday, Feb 17th @ 5:00 pm
What a different a few days make! Jeff is freely getting about in his wheelchair by "pedaling" with both feet. His nurse said today that he is walking very well. For the past two days, he has been feeding himself pureed foods. A golden retriever therapy dog paid Jeff a visit today. Jeff reached out to pet the dog's forehead and the dog licked Jeff's face. Great therapy - wouldn't you say?! Thanks so much for your consistent well wishes and prayers.
Update: Tuesday, Feb 15th @ 7:00 pm
It seems that Jeff progresses a bit more each day. He can get out of bed by himself, but it is still not safe for him to do so. He now has a special bed that looks like a tent and zips up completely. It protects him should he try to slip out quickly. He has been getting around with the help of a nurse or family members in his wheel chair. He can use his feet to push himself some distance. But mostly he directs the person pushing with hand gestures. He is eating ice chips, as he is not quite ready to solid food. Today he looked through a magazine with Al Jr and seemed to recognize the images. He received several cards, balloons, etc for Valentine's Day. We love you Jeff!
Update: Monday, Feb 7 @ 7:50 am
Jeff had a great weekend! On Saturday, Pam had taken him outside in his wheel chair to get some of that beautiful sunshine and fresh air. He took a couple of naps during the day and seemed very rested. Al Jr., Mercedes and I were able to visit with him late in the afternoon. I gave Jeff a Super Bowl hat that I had purchased for him in Dallas earlier in the week. He took the hat and placed it on his head. He then took it off and adjusted the brim as if to break it in and he put it back on his head. Ha! I think he likes it!!! He then played catch with us for about 20 minutes. He even faked a throw to Mercedes. That's the Jeff we know and love. Al Jr. and Mercedes were leaving and she told her Uncle Jeff that she loved him. She waved goodbye and Jeff returned the wave! He waved to Al Jr too. These are huge moments for Jeff and all of us. Today, Jeff walked around his gym twice with his physical therapists. He is progressing very well with his PT. His doctor gave him permission to watch part of the Super Bowl tonight. He is the best dressed Steelers fan ever with jackets, sweatshirts, t-shirts, hats and a fleece blanket from his friends and family. Well, so much for Pittsburgh, but Jeff's going to win his game! Thanks for your continued wishes and for checking in on Jeff today.
Update: Saturday, Feb. 5, @ 8:00 am
Jeff was recently fitted for a smaller trach - from a size 8 to a size 4. It was supposed to be in place for 48 hours. Jeff yanked it out after ~18 hours. Well that was that! I guess he decided he does not need it any longer. And they are not going to replace it. He is so much more comfortable now and it certainly indicates progress. Jeff's smile is even and full. We love it when he smiles. He has been throwing a ball on command as a part of this therapy. He played catch with Marilyn and today with Ray - 9 throws! Jeff's physical therapist, Brooks Aberg, saw him today. Jeff was very fond of Brooks who helped him recover quickly from his back surgery last year. Jeff recognized him immediately and flashed a big smile as they exchanged a "high five." And finally for today, Mercedes (age 4) was riding with Marilyn in the car and asked her Grandma why people go to school for so many years. After Grandma's explanation, Mercedes replied that she was going to be a painter and work with Uncle Jeff. She asked where his phone was so she could answer it for him too. Specialty Paintworks - you have a new crew member on the way. Out of the mouths of babes!
Update: Wednesday, Feb 2 @ 7:30 am
Progress and more progress! All of the previous blood clots Jeff had in his limbs are now insignificant. He walked ~60 feet during physical therapy. Jeff also counted from 1-9. It seems that doctors and staff are very happy and pleasantly surprised at the rate of progress from Jeff. He is amazing, isn't he? Thank you for your continued positive thoughts and prayers. And many thanks for your continued "get well" posts which has almost reached 1000! We look forward to the day when Jeff can begin to read your messages.
Update: Sunday, January 23 @ 4:00 pm

We hope to see you all again very soon!
Update: Friday, Jan 28 @ 6:00pm
Jeff has been progressing all week and had a very productive day today. He walked six steps in physical therapy with very little help. After that mouthed the word, "Wow!" along with a bit of sound according to his speech therapists. He now has a device on his trach that now allows for sound. The OT had Jeff throw a small ball to Ray, who was in the room visiting. He successfully threw it across the bed twice. It was great to see! Today he was wearing a t-shirt and shorts. It is nice that he can be out of a hospital gown. He has Pittsburgh Steelers stickers on the windows of his hospital room so that when he looks out, he is reminded of his favorite football team. Apologies for the delay this week with updates. I hope you all understand that I am doing my best to provide you with meaningful updates/information. I think that your get well posts are helpful not only to the family, but also to each one of you making the posts. We positively have a Jeff Russell Network going on here. Keep it up and thanks for your strength and caring thoughts toward my brother.
Update: Friday, January 21 @ 7:30 am
Jeff had a wonderful nurse over the past few days that was experienced with TBI (traumatic brain injury) patients. It seems that she has asked many of the right questions and helped to push things forward for Jeff. We thank you Tami!!! He has also progressed very well and has been quite responsive over the past several days. He has been smiling, shaking his head yes/no and moving his right leg again. Tonight he was active and sat up repeatedly on his own. He seems ready to get on with more rehabilitative therapy. Thanks so much for checking on Jeff today. We are very thankful for all of you!
Update: Monday, January, 18 @ 6:30 am
Good things are happening! I forgot to mention that Jeff's neck brace was removed last week. He is very happy about this and is much more comfortable. Today, his gall bladder drain was removed, after a positive ultra sound last week. He also expressed emotion yesterday in front of most of the family. It was a great sign of progress. Interesting how we take such things for granted. I know that Jeff appreciates your prayers and well wishes. We all do - so please keep them coming!
Jeff's road to Recovery
Thank you to the owners of Stone Creek Cafe
for putting up this awesome display of support for our dear friend.

Update: Tuesday, Dec 21 @ 5:15 pm Jeff has been very active for the past couple of days. He is moving both legs a lot and seems to want to get out of that bed. We are thrilled that the right leg has movement now. The occupational therapist is working quite a bit with him. Thanks so much for checking in of Jeff and for your continued prayers and positive thoughts.
Update: Thursday, Dec 23 @ 6:30 am There is no doubt about it - Jeff wants to get out of that bed. He has been sleeping a lot. But when he wakes up (usually in the afternoon and evening), he is a handful for Pam and the nurses. Of course, we are thrilled that he is so active. It certainly comes as no surprise that he is ready to get moving. We are all looking forward to his next bit of progress. Please know that we are so thankful for all of you and your continued support. Keep thinking the positive thoughts!!! Fundraising update - Wow! What a great charity poker tournament! Thanks to all the players and personal donations. A special thanks to Al Russell, Jr., Ed Bollinger, Donny Colton, Bill Schultz, Mike Edwards, Dave Perry for organizing the event. Special thanks to Mike Mazek for donating the location and Dave Perry for the game tables. More special thanks to Donny Colton for donating his 1st place prize. Bill Rice, Ed and Mike also donated their 2nd and 3rd place prizes. Finally, thanks to Mike Edwards for running the game.
Update: Friday, Dec 24 @ 9:00 pm (Christmas Eve) I went to visit Jeff this evening. Pam had just left to return home to feed the animals. Goade was in the room with Jeff. We heard that he had quite another active day. He is wearing his helmet in bed now because he keeps trying to sit himself up. This is just additional protection for him now that he wants to get on with things. Jeff was a bit drowsy tonight, so I did not anticipate staying to long. I leaned over and said to him that Bobby G (Wings Side Up) had sent him a very nice Christmas present. Jeff opened his eye widely and put a big smile on his face. He was squeezing my hand and shaking it. I have not seen Jeff smile that big or with such intent since the accident. (Of course, Pam is with him most of the day and may have seen something like that.) Once again, I was so thankful that Goade was a witness to this. He confirmed for me that I was not imagining it and that Jeff had responded to the mention of Bobby G. With that, we offer our sincere appreciation to Bobby G, his staff and radio show listeners from Wing Side Up! Thank you for a wonderful Christmas present for Jeff. You are a great support for him and for others in our family. And thanks to all of you for your Christmas wishes!
Update: Saturday, Dec 25 @ 5:30 pm (Christmas Day) It has been eight weeks since the accident. Grace fell upon Jeff. He is our miracle on Christmas and everyday. Our family thanks you so very much for your generosity and for your beautiful Christmas wishes. Our hearts are warm today! Our family has some special messages for Jeff on Christmas - Mercedes - Lord, please help Jeff get better. And better all day. Let him get out of the hospital. Al Jr. - Merry Christmas Jeff. It's not the same without you. Mercedes misses Uncle Jeff putting her toys together. Love you very much! Keep fighting. Lora - Merry Christmas Jeff. I miss you. I did not have a companion this year for that shot of cognac. Mercedes missed you so much. We do not have you this year to play. Please get well soon. We are going to have so much fun together. We love you. Al Sr. - Get well son. I miss you! Marilyn - You are doing well Jeff. I know we will have you back completely soon. I love you - Mom. Bob - I wish you were back and that we could be doing things together again. Ray and Judy - We love you and are looking forward to a full and speedy recovery. Brent - I miss my Christmas phone call. I wish you were out of there so that we could go have a beer. I want to give you a big hug and know that you know its me - your cousin. Denise - I wish to have many more Christmas holidays with you. Jennifer - My only wish is for you to have your life back, brother. And I know you will. I also never realized how much your special Christmas cards meant to me until today. I love you!
Update: Tuesday, Dec 28 @ 9:10pm A nice article about Jeff appeared in The Idaho Statesman today. Thanks to Paige McDaniel and Mike Prater from the Statesman!
Update: Friday, December 31st (New Year's Eve) On October 31st, the day following Jeff's accident, he had surgery to remove blood clots from his brain. As a part of this procedure, the neurosurgeon remove part of his skull bone and "planted' it in his ride side to keep it "alive." On Wednesday, a local Boise neurosurgeon placed the skull bone back. He has been recovering nicely. His helmet is no longer needed. The day after surgery he was lifting himself to sit upright again. He is tough! He now has a sitter with him 24 hours a day to make certain he does not climb out of bed by himself. Pam is very happy that such good attention is being paid to him. Doctors are also attending to his previous surgical procedures (gall bladder, stomach, eye, etc) to make certain all are healing properly. We hope that his (room air) trach and neck brace can be removed soon. This will make Jeff very happy. We look forward to a new year that will bring Jeff a full recovery. That is our wish! Here's to all of you - thanks for thinking of Jeff today and have a very safe and Happy New Year! Just a quick note,
I just wanted to personally thank all of you that have been checking in on Jeff and Praying for him. Since the accident in October, you have visited Jeff's website over 65,000 times. I know this is going to be overwelming for Jeff when he sees your concern and outpouring of love for him and his family. Have a Happy and Safe New Years.
Drew-
Update: Sunday, Jan 2, 2011 @ 5:15 pm Doctors did some testing over the weekend following Jeff's surgery. He has pneumonia, a staph infection and a small blood clot in his right arm. Much of this is normal. He is on antibiotics and pain medication. He is getting some much needed rest to help him heal. He has been very active and restless over the past weeks. We anticipate that he will get through these issues very soon. However, we would love your prayers and positive healing thoughts, as always! Thanks for your caring and wonderful New Year's wishes for Jeff and the entire family.
Update: Wednesday, Jan 5th @ 7:15 pm Jeff underwent an unexpected surgery late last night to remove the skull bone that had been placed last week. It seems his infection is due to the bone itself. He is recovering today from the procedure. He is in pain - simply put. Could you please send your positive prayers and thoughts his way? Heal the pain he must be feeling from the surgery, heal his staph infection, heal his pneumonia. Jeff needs us all right now. Do what you do so well! Many, many thanks to you all!
Update: Thursday, Jan 6 @ 9:45 pm We must thank you all once again for your get well messages to Jeff. We read them every day. To Michelle and Rick Harris - yes, we know of the Bob Woodruff story. Thanks for calling him out. It is a great story. Our cousin Jeanne Miranda Klein gave Mom the book to read. It is being passed around the family. We are also reading " My Stroke of Insight" by Jill Bolte Taylor. I spoke with a nurse tonight who used to work with brain trauma patients at the Elk's Rehabilitation Center in Boise. He reminded me that every person is different in their recovery. The process will take time, commitment, patience and positive attitudes by those around Jeff. Jeff is recovering from his surgery and seems quite restless. A prosthetic bone is being made and will be placed in about six weeks. Jeff's cousins Marcie and Brent arrived from Washington tonight and were able to spend a bit of time with Jeff. Brent has not seen Jeff since that first week in Las Vegas. Marcie commented the he just wants to get out of that bed. Someday his mind and body will make that connection. Prayers are appreciated very much. Thanks for thinking of Jeff today.
Update: Saturday, Jan 8th @ 4:45 pm Not much new to report. Jeff is recovering and trying to rest. Thanks again for you prayers and well wishes.
Update: Monday, January 10 @ 5:00 pm It was a bit of upheaval this weekend for Jeff. But finally, his doctor believes that his infections are clearing, as the cultures are coming back negative. They also had to adjust his pain medication and his tube feeding. Finally, it seems he is getting a bit of much needed rest. Thanks Gary and Laurie for another book recommendation. I have been hearing many positive recovery stories from friends. The brain is most amazing - both mysterious and miraculous. Thank you once again for keeping Jeff, Pam and this family in your positive thoughts and prayers. They are very much needed and appreciated!
Update: Friday January 14 @ 7:00 pm Today was a very good day. Pam was quite sick over the past few days and is feeling much better now. Jeff seems to be recovering quite well from his surgeries and the infection. We hope that his pain meds are dialed in even more so now. He is alert and even attempted to return a kiss to Pam tonight. (I hope she does not mind that I am sharing, but she was so excited with his action.) Jeff will still be on antibiotics for another week. We do not anticipate his skull bone (flap) to be replaced for at least another seven weeks. Most of the family, spent a couple of good hours with Jeff's doctors tonight. Good communication can be difficult to come by with various doctors and multiple family members. Hopefully, we are all on track now. We should know results of a test tomorrow that will determine if Jeff's gall bladder drain/tube can be removed. We hope that he is can get into rehab soon. This will be the next phase in his recovery process. We are certain that your prayers and positive energies helped Jeff to pass through this recent disruption. We can now move onward to more unfolding very soon. Again, we love your messages and are are certain that Jeff feels them. You are all amazing and we thank you so very much!
Jeff's Recovery
Update: Tuesday, Dec 7 @ 6:45pm It seems that many are missing Jeff's daily updates. I will do my best to provide more frequent communications. Jeff had a really good day today. He is tracking family members with his right eye. When he is not sleeping, he has it open quite a bit. His left eye has improved so much over the past week. The swelling and redness are greatly reduced. There was some additional movement today. Jeff was doing foot circles with his left (broken) leg. That's our Jeff! (He seems to be starting physical therapy on his own.) I have to say, I think Jeff is really happy to be home in Boise. He looks so good and at peace. Please continue to think of Jeff daily. We are very thankful for your well wishes for us, as well! Additional Info
Update: Thursday, Dec 9 @ 8:05 pm Another very good day for Jeff. The Occupational Therapist was working with Jeff and was pleased with his balance. He looked great too when I saw him today. They have placed a mitt on his left hand because he is starting to pick at things (the nurse says he is getting into trouble). I whispered something about his glove. It had Velcro at the wrist. He somehow managed to slip his glove off of that hand. Ray had mentioned that the nurses were calling him Houdini. Please know that Jeff is doing very well. We are thankful that his condition is stable with signs of improvement. We certainly do not miss the daily ups and downs that we experienced in Las Vegas. If I don't posted an update every day, it does not mean anything bad has happened. It only means that all is well and Jeff is simply resting. We all still have a job to do each day for Jeff and that is to think of him recovering to his fullest. Thanks so much for checking in on Jeff. It means a lot to us all !!!
Update: Sunday, Dec 12 @ 12:30 pm As I had mentioned previously, Jeff is resting a lot. Given that, there may not be a lot to write regarding an update. I have asked Pam and Mom for their thank you list. I will be sharing this very long list with you over the next week. "Our family extends warmest thanks for everyone's prayers and good wishes." Denise and Lester Alter for getting "our" Jeff back home and always being there for us! Thanks Ray for all of your love for Jeff and all of your hard work. Thanks to our entire family for so much love and support from Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and the Philippines. Thanks to cousin Brent Hoelzle for coming to Vegas from Washington to support Jeff. Thanks to Joe Freidburger for sitting and praying for Jeff and family. Thanksgiving dinner, banana bread and the Fat Boy Burger. Thanks to your lovely wife. Thanks to Ron, Vickie and Kaylie Barker for all their prayers and support. (Many more thanks coming and this list is in no particular order.) Today was Mom (Marilyn's) birthday. The family got together to celebrate because that is what Jeff would want, although he was missed very much! I am saving him a piece of cake. It is in the freezer with his name on it. Thanks to you all for thinking of Jeff today. We know he feels it!
Update: Monday, Dec 13 @ 6:00 pm Jeff rested a lot today, as he was very active on Sunday. We do believe he has moved beyond his coma into what is defined as "Traumatic Brain Injury." He was moving his left arm up above his shoulder. He grabbed the side bed rail and tried to sit himself up!!! He gets an expression on his mouth like he wants to speak. He is moving his broken left leg quite a bit too. We have a family meeting with the doctors tomorrow and hope to learn more about what to expect in the coming days, weeks. More thanks . . . To our extended family in Russia (Galena, Artem, Nicoli) - your thoughts and prayers are very helpful to all of us! George and Teresa Collingham - for the lovely silk plant sent to Jeff in Las Vegas. Our sincere thanks to Marisa and Mike Turner for your prayers and taking care of Mom and Pam in Las Vegas. We will never forget you and your family. Mike - another special thanks to you and the track emergency team for knowing exactly what to do under such extreme circumstances Another hug to you!. We had mentioned this before, but again - to the University Medical Center doctors and nurses for saving our Jeff and also for their love and encouragement. Thanks for all of the love and prayers from Jeff's pit crew/friends - (Jeff) Goade, Glen, Wayne, Bob, Mike and Drew! More thank you notes to come. Thanks for thinking of Jeff again today. I think you can see the power of our daily thoughts and prayers!!!
Update: Tuesday, Dec 14th at 6:45 pm The family met with a doctor today. We walked away realizing the nice progress Jeff has made in the two weeks he has been back in Boise. He is active. He seems responsive to us. He is awake most of each day. His scars are healing well and he seems to want to scratch them. He is much improved and we are certain that he will improve even further by Christmas. We are anxious to get input from Jeff's neurologist. He will have even more information for us. More thanks from Pam and Marilyn (and the rest of the family) . . . Thanks to Sharon Mathie (Pam's Mother) for being there and for getting Pam to Las Vegas. Dan and Travis for keeping the business going. You guys are doing a great job and you know that Jeff is proud of you! Many thanks to Tina, as well! Ralene - thank you for everything you do for the entire family. We love you! Thanks to Al Sr. for believing that Jeff's strength will get him through this. Thanks to Al Jr. and Jennifer for so much love given to their brother. He feels it!
Update: Thursday, Dec 16th @ 6:44 pm HUGE day for Jeff! The occupational therapist had him sitting up in a chair today. He was actually holding himself up and trying to lift himself off of the chair. If all goes well tomorrow, he may be pushed around in a wheelchair. Amazing progress for Jeff. More thanks . . . A very big thank you to Drew Palmer. Drew is Jeff's dear friend, pit crew member and has managed the OF Racing website for several years. Drew stands by each day waiting to post my updates. I am sure all of you thank him, as well. Kirk and Susie Wartman for prayers, gift package and phone calls. Soni Coffman and Debbie Brownell for feeding Bob while Marilyn was away! I want to also thank my neighbors Mary Ann and Leon Wyatt for taking care of every thing while we were in Las Vegas. What dear people! More thanks you's later. We appreciate your checking in on Jeff today!
Update: Sunday, Dec 19 @ 9:30 am On my visit to see Jeff on Thursday evening, we had another amazing occurrence. (Jeff) Goade was in the room with me - I am so glad he was there as a witness. Our Jeff grabbed my coat sleeve and was working his way up to my shoulder and then to my back. He was pulling me toward him, as if to give me a hug. I laid my head on my brother's chest to gently hug him back. He repeatedly rubbed the back of my head. It was a very special gesture that is huge for me/us. Jeff rested most of the day on Friday. He has had a very active and productive week. More thanks . . . to Jeff Goade, well just Goade to us. . . who is one of Jeff's dearest friends . . . making the trips to Vegas for Jeff, Pam and Mom, for calling to check on me (Jennifer) because my brother couldn't and for taking care of Pam and doing the many things that need to be done around the house to get ready for winter. To D&A Glass - the Kirkes family and everyone that sent money and gift cards to Pam and Mom. Randy Irish for making the trip to deliver care packages to Vegas. . . Crissie too! Ken Coventry for prayers and encouraging phone calls. More thanks to follow. Thanks a lot for thinking of Jeff today. We really appreciate it!
Las Vegas Bullring
Jeff's Family would like to ask friends and family to pray for Jeff as he is in Critical but stable condition. It appears that the front spindle broke sending Jeff into the wall at a high rate of speed. Jeff had to be cut out of the car and was Transported to Las Vegas Trauma center. He is currently undergoing surgery at this time. The family is asking that fans and friends not call the hospital. We will update this website as new information becomes available.
UpDate: Sunday Oct. 31, 3:50 pm / Idaho Time
Jeff came through brain surgery and is doing well. They removed a couple of blood clots and fixed a couple of bleeds. His brain has swollen so they have removed a small piece of skull to relieve the pressure. The doctors are encouraged by his improvements.
His injuries are extensive. He has a fractured vertebrae in his neck, a broken arm, and leg, some broken ribs, and some bruised lungs. He is still unconscious. He will have a long recovery, but he is strong, and things are looking up tonight. Please keep up your prayers. They are being answered one step at a time.
Update: Monday Nov 1, 8:20 am
Jeff is still in critical condition this morning. Pam stayed the night with Jeff and hasnt left his side. He has good reflexes and appears there is no spinal cord injury. The doctors are keeping him sudated. Jeff has a tube in his chest and the doctors say it may be anywhere from a week to a month before the tube can be removed. Jeffs mother Marilyn is going to stay in Vegas in a Cottage till he is released. His wife Pam, may have to leave in a couple of weeks so as to not loose her job. Pray he is doing much better by this time so she will be able to work. The family would like to thank all of the fans, family and friends for all of your prayers. This has been devistating to all who know and love Jeff.
Update Monday Nov. 1, 9:40 am
The swelling in Jeff's brain has gone way down. They have put a sensor in his brain to determine any future swelling and help detect any future clots. His leg has been set but the fracture in his neck has not been repaired as of yet. He is looking better this morning Marilyn said. Jeff is fortunate to have such a loving wife and mother. They really need our prayers and support right now. Marilyn said she woke up crying this morning, but she is very optimistic.
Update: Monday Nov 1, 10:32 am
Jeff is back in surgery to remove more blood clots and to put some sort of screen to filter any clots out and keep them out of his heart. Jeff Goad said the doctors claim this is expected with the reduction of swelling.
Update: Monday Nov 1, 2:40 pm
Jeff is out of surgery. They put a stint like screen in to protect his heart from clots and repaired a few more vessells. The doctors are encouraging and are planning his next surgeries. Jeff has some other injuries not mentioned above. He also has a broken jaw and his check and eyesocket are broken. The impact also broke both of his eardrums. The eye throat and ear specialist say he may loose some hearing. I believe they may repair his neck next as they are concerned about moving his head. The swelling is continuing to go down which doctors say is a very good sign.
Update: Monday Nov 1, 6:45 pm
Bob Cambou said Jeff has moved his hand and a foot on his own. This is a very good sign. The doctors dont really want to see Jeff wake up just yet. They say he will heal much faster and the pain is more easily managed if hes not awake. The family members are encouraged not to move him or try to wake him.
Update: Tuesday Nov 2, 12:45 pm
Pam called me this morning and said Jeff had some more test run last night. The tests seem to indicate progress. Shes asking everyone to pray he gets movement in his right hand. Pam would like to thank everyone for there support and prayers, however she wants to encourage everyone to keep Jeff in your prayers as he is still not out of the woods. She told me knowing everyone is praying for Jeff is helping her and Marilyn cope with the situation.
Personal Note: I will try to update as often as I can. I work out in the field and dont always have internet access.
Update Tuesday Nov 2, 6:40 pm Jeff is still unconscious tonight but is improving. Tomorrow he will have surgery on his leg. They are going to put a rod in it. Bob and Marilyn were under the impression the leg had been set. Pam and Marilyn have learned that donations will be taken at the Las Vegas Bullring races on Friday and Saturday nights.
There is some good news this morning. The doctors are saying his neck should heal on its own so they dont anticipate a future surgery on this . The earlier reports where that he had a broken arm. Bob said they revised this claim. There is not a break in the arm. He still hasnt moved his right hand yet, but the doctors say that he has moved his right leg, so they dont believe it is a disconnect from the brain. I asked Bob about Jeffs Jaw and check bone and he said they really havent addressed these area as of yet. Everytime I talk to Pam and Marilyn, they stress thanking all of you for your prayers and support. It is an awesome thing to see what an incredible racing family can do in times of crisis. They wanted to thank all of the family and friends that rushed to their sides flying in from all over. Jeffs sister Jennifer was on a plane the next morning as were His brother Al Jr, Al senior, and Jeffs long time friend Randy Irish, and Jeff's cousin Brent Hoelzle. I may have missed some people, and I appologize if I did.The outpouring of love from so many people is an indication of the impact Jeff has had in not only the racing arena but in his life. He is a great friend. Thank you all. Im sure Jeff will be overwhelmed at the outpouring of prayers from all of you.
Update: Wednesday Nov. 3, 7:50 pm
Jeff went into surgery at 5:00 pm Idaho time to put the rod in his left leg. His blood count was low and they had to give him a transfusion. The nurse told Marilyn it's fairly common. Marilyn said the doctors told her Jeff wouldn't need anymore surgeries other than to replace the piece in his skull. I will update when Jeff gets out of surgery if it's not to late.
Update: Wednesday Nov. 3, 8:50
Jeff is out of surgery and the doctors said he did well. The leg was badly broken and had allot of bone fragments that had to be removed. The doctor said it may be slow healing, but he should get full use of it. Pam said she sleeps next to Jeff at night. She wants to be there in case he wakes up. She said the nurses do reflex testing at night, and she thought a couple of times he was going to wake up. Pam asks that you continue praying for his right arm and hand. He still hasnt moved it. Pam and Marilyn seem in better spirits. Each day seems to be a little less stressful than the last. It will be such a relief when he is awake and talking.
Special Message from Jeff's sister Jennifer.
I have read every one of your messages for my brother, Jeff. Your words have brought comfort to our family and close friends who have been at Jeff's side over the past several days. Most importantly, I am certain that Jeff is receptive to each prayer and healing thought you send his way. I am quite positive that my brother will make a full recovery. Every day I will see him in that light. May I ask that you all continue to send your prayers and well wishes to Jeff each day? I know he can feel your thoughts and hear your words. Our entire family is so thankful to all of you for your love and support. Jennifer Russell Update: Thursday Nov. 4, 9:00 pm Not much happened today. They gave Jeff two units of blood to try and raise the oxygen level to Jeff's brain. They did a cat scan tonight, but the results havent come back as of yet. Pam said she leaned over Jeff today and told him Marilyn and her were going to be there till he wakes up, and Pam said a tear rolled down his cheek. If you would like to send Jeff a card, the address is 247 Buckskin Dr. Nampa Idaho, 83687 in care of Drew Palmer. Please just send cards as we will need to transport them to Jeff when he wakes up. Jeff is a Painting contractor, and before he left he had jobs set up for his guys to do while he was gone. Dan is Jeff's number one guy, and he would like everyone to know Specialty Paintworks is still doing business. Dan is very capable of doing the work for Jeff while he's healing. I am a Painting Contractor as well and I will be helping Dan if he needs it. Dan is carrying Jeffs phone so he can be reached. It's very important that everyone knows Jeff's still in business. Message from Jennifer Russell
Jeff Russell Benefit Fund
We are beginning to learn of many generous and thoughtful fundraising ideas to assist Jeff financially. The kindness is overwhelming. The family has set up two accounts in order to simplify this process. If you would like to donate as a result of your fundraising efforts or as your own generous way of helping out,"Jeff Russell Benefit Fund" at any Key Bank or US Bank. Again, we are so appreciative and know that Jeff will be so very thankful to all of you.

Update: Saturday Nov. 6, 5:30pm
I talked to Marilyn and she said the doctors replaced the drug that was keeping Jeff sudated, and his blood pressure spiked to 219 on the high side. They have gotten his blood pressure down now. He moved his right hand when they tried to bring him around today, but the pressure in his brain started climbing and it took a while for it to go down. The doctors are saying hes not ready to wake up yet. Pray for Pam and Marilyn as they are wearing down from all the pressure they've been under. Pray that Jeff will continue to improve, and not have any complications
Update: Saturday Nov. 6, 7:35
I just spoke with Pam who received an update from Jeff's doctors. The swelling has gone down considerably in his face, arms and legs. Pam was in the room when nurses cleaned his oxygen tube (which Jeff does not like) and he moved his right hand. We certainly see this as good progress. Jeff's lungs are no longer being drained, but there is still concern about the bruising. Another good note is that Jeff's blood pressure has stabilized. Tomorrow the doctors will begin to reduce Jeff's sedation so that they can get sense of his responsiveness. Jeff is still listed as critical, but stable condition. Thanks so very much to all of you who check in daily. Your positive thoughts and prayers are reaching Jeff
Update: Sunday Nov 7, 8:25 pm
It was a good day! Jeff's lungs are showing signs of improvement. Today's lab tests came back "beautifully." The doctor made a passing comment to Marilyn that 'we are making headway - heading in the right direction.' The sedation drugs have been changed and it may take a day or two to see the results. Pam was in good spirits today and said that he "looks more and more like Jeff everyday." I don't think it is possible to doubt the power of positive thought and prayer. We must keep it up each day. Jeff needs all of us in order to fully recover. Thanks so much for checking in and thinking of him today! Update: Monday Nov. 8, 8:50 pm
Jeff had an MRI on his spine today. It showed small fragments on the side, but appears not to be a cause for concern. His cervical fracture at C2 is beginning to heal. He was fitted for a helmet to protect his head once he begins to get up and around. Jeff's blood pressure and fever were a bit high today. Pam is keeping on the nurses to make sure his tylenol and cold compresses are on hand. Overall, the doctors are happy with the progress, even though they want to see some things move more quickly. We are most certain that Jeff has the best care possible. At the time of the writing, Jeff's Pittsburgh Steelers are winning 20-7 against Cincinnati. We know that makes him smile. Thanks for thinking of Jeff today!
Update: Tuesday Nov 9, 5:50pm
The doctors are now trying to wake Jeff up slowly by bringing the sedation down again and by playing music in his room. Pam insists on Christian contemporary music, although she knows he would have other choices. Al Jr. (Jeff's brother) brought Jeff's bible from home. His good friend, Drew Palmer, gave him "The Book of Psalms" one year for Christmas. Pam is reading verses to Jeff and encourages you to do the same. She said that at certain points throughout the day, he moves his legs and will move his head very slightly back and forth. He has pneumonia (expected) and a bit of jaundice (unexpected), so they are checking his gall bladder with an ultra sound. His blood pressure and fever are back under control. They have changed out his neck brace and are painting camouflage on his new helmet, as plain white will not do. It was a "cruise control" day and we will certainly take that. Once again, thanks so much for your 'get well' messages on the site. The love, healing thoughts and prayers are much appreciated. Update: Wed. Nov. 10, 7:25pm
Jeff's sedation is back up as doctors placed a drainage tube in his gall bladder. His lab work came back and the results were very good. He reached an oxygen level goal today (from 100% to 40%). The doctors are very pleased. As always, keep Jeff in your thoughts and thanks very much for checking on him today. Update: Thurs. Nov. 11, 7:30 pm
There is not a lot to report today. The doctors are taking down Jeff's sedation. It will take some time to leave his system. It is now a waiting game to see how he responds. The waiting and anticipation can be difficult for all of us. However, we feel so very fortunate at his progress so far. Now more than ever, Jeff needs your positive thoughts and prayers. He is so lucky to have so many of you thinking of him and checking on his progress every day. New Updates at the top

Update: Saturday Nov. 13, 8:00am
Another steady and stable day for Jeff. They sat him up in bed and he wore his helmet for a bit. Al Jr. was just in Las Vegas to visit his brother for several days. He said "Jeff looks like he lost 100 lbs" since the previous week because of the reduced swelling all over his body. Al said he open his right eye and blinked a couple of times. Of course, this was just small, but new reaction. He has also had the hiccups quite a bit. The antibiotics used for the pneumonia are working. Al has been a pillar of strength for Marilyn, Pam and especially Jeff. Jeff is very fortunate to have his little brother taking care of things. Get well soon Jeff! We love you very much!
Update: Sunday, Nov 14, 2010 - 5:10 pm Jeff had a tracheotomy this morning which allowed for the breathing tube that he dislikes so much to be removed. This will also eliminate future episodes of pneumonia. The doctor said he did great throughout the procedure. He has no fractured or dislocated jaw, as originally thought. It was actually the breathing tube altering the cat scan film. Doctors also thought he may have a fracture left eye socket, but it is edema (extreme swelling) and will heal in time. We will take those bits of good news. Mom was very excited today when Jeff opened his right eye and kept it open for some time. Granted, it does not appear that he can focus. Both Pam and Al Jr have seen this too, but it made her day. It's these little things that keep us going. As we mentioned previously, many activities are taking place to assist Jeff financially. We are so thankful for your kindness. And again, we request that all donations be made to the Jeff Russell benifit fund at any Key bank or US Bank. If you have any questions about your own or other fundraising/donation efforts, please contact Al Russell, Jr. @ 208.724.8899. Thanks so much for checking on Jeff today.
Update - Monday, Nov 15th, 2010 - 4:00 pm
It was a good meeting with the doctors today and Jeff is recovering well after his procedure yesterday. They are going try to wean him from the ventilator as a trial to see if he can breathe on his own. They also did labs today and his results will be back tomorrow. Our family is so pleased and really quite amazed at the number of friends that Jeff has gathered over the years. It should be no surprise really, as he is very caring toward others and made friends where ever he went. We all know that someday soon Jeff will be reading these 600+ 'get well' messages. In addition to your notes wishing him well, could you share with us your favorite story about Jeff? I think it would be helpful to all of us to laugh and smile as we envision his full and speedy recovery. We look forward to reading your stories. Thanks ever so much for checking in on Jeff today
Update: Wed. Nov. 17, 6:00 pm
Late last night, doctors conducted exploratory surgery on Jeff's stomach, as they were concerned when a cat scan showed air in his abdominal area. They found that the feeding tube was leaking air and fluid. Thankfully, it was nothing serious. They also took stitches out of his head today. He is resting well and has opened his right eye several times. He looks more and more like Jeff as each day passes. He has good color in his face. Marilyn and Pam want to thank Marisa Turner (Las Vegas) for kindly doing laundry for them. It is so helpful. Thanks to all of you for your continued prayers and positive thoughts. We are all enjoying the stories being shared about Jeff. Keep them coming. He will enjoy reading them one day soon! Update: Thurs. Nov. 18, 6:30 pm
Jeff is still progressing well after his stomach procedure. Doctors are hoping his hiccups subside. They seemed to have diminished a bit today. The most exciting news of the day is that Jeff reached up with his left hand and scratched his chest. He has been itching for quite a while this afternoon actually. It maybe be an allergic reaction to one of his meds. Benadryl is on the way. Nevertheless, everyone seems to be pretty excited about the movement. It was a good day. Thanks so much for thinking about Jeff today.
Update: Friday Nov. 19, 6:15pm
Another good day for Jeff. His labs came back and his blood shows no sign of bacteria. The pnuemonia has diminished, but not entirely gone. He has not hiccupped today which is great progress. This has enabled him to keep is liquid feeding and vitamins down. The doctors want to make certain that he is well nourished before consideration of transport back to Boise. We hope that day is near. He did a lot of left handed squeezing today. He also moved his right arm and both legs. The movement is very encouraging. We are so appreciative of your love and support.
Jeff Update - Saturday, Nov 20th @ 11:30 pm The message is delayed today because I just returned from a four-day visit with my brother. When I arrived on Wednesday and began talking to Jeff, he opened is right eye. This was amazing since I had not been with him since November 2nd. Yesterday, when I asked if he knew I was there, Jeff squeezed my hand. Tears filled my eyes. He has been squeezing the hands of other family members for three days now. Pam received the first squeeze, as it should be. As of today, the itching has stopped, but he is still squeezing and opening his hand. His nurse commented to him, "Squeeze on, brother." His right hand seems a bit swollen. They did an x-ray and nothing is broken. It could be due to lack of movement. Pam and the nurses will work with this hand a bit more to get it moving like it was yesterday. His left eye seemed a bit more swollen and they found that he has an infection called cellulitis, which is being treated with antibiotics. Jeff is keeping is liquid food down and his hiccups seem to be gone now. From my perspective, Jeff's progress is truly remarkable. Pam and Mom are tired but moving along. They have it down to a routine now. I was able to get them out of the hospital/hotel a couple of times. I hope it helped to lift them a bit. Family and friends are there now to visit Jeff and that is also helpful to Pam and Mom. I also want you to know I shared some of your stories and comments with Jeff. I know he can feel them somehow, but I wanted to read some of them to him, as well. Given Pam and Mom don't have computer access, Mom was able to sit at my Mac a couple of times and read through your well wishes. It brought tears because you can feel the caring. I know many of you check this site every day. I have heard of some Las Vegas kids who log onto the website to check on Jeff before and after they go to school. We thank you for checking on Jeff again today. Keep your stories coming. He will love them! (Jennifer)
Update for Sunday, Nov 21, 2010 @ 9:20 pm Jeff's left eye has been increasingly red and swollen over the past week. It was determined it was cellulitis, which is a nasty infection. The doctor was concerned enough to rush him into a procedure to relieve the pressure and treat the bacteria at around midnight. They did a cat scan at 2:00 am and found bleeding behind the eye. Late this morning, a carotid angiogram was preformed by an amazing doctor who is typically practices Michigan, but happened to be at UMC Las Vegas. This technology is only 10 years old. The procedure had only been done twice before at University Medical Center. Jeff was the third. The doctor found a microscopic perforation and was able to place a coil to stop the bleeding. Jeff came through surgery brilliantly and the doctors are very pleased. We feel that Jeff is under the best care possible at UMC Las Vegas. We also know that Jeff is truly a miracle and is being guided in every way. Prayers and positive thoughts continue to bless this husband, son, brother, uncle and friend. Our continued thanks to you!
Update for Monday, Nov 22 @ 6:00 pm Jeff is recovering very well after yesterday's surgery. He is responding to requests to move his left arm and his legs. Pam says his grip is tight and he is actually moving more today than in days past. Pam and Marilyn seem to be in very good spirits today. Some family and great friends were there for the weekend. Without a doubt, Jeff was glad that they were there. And without a doubt, Jeff is glad you are thinking of him today.
Update: Tuesday, Nov 23 @ 6:45 pm A vascular scan was performed today to check for bleeding behind Jeff's eye. Thankfully, there is no bleeding - meaning that amazing surgery was a success. The doctors are still concerned about the pressure build up/swelling on that left eye. They continued with antibiotics and as of this afternoon, the swelling seemed to be going down a bit. Jeff's left eye has a lot of healing to do and Pam is asking you all to please focus on it with prayers (or whatever you choose to do). We all know what a miracle we have here with Jeff's progress overall. Let's take it further tonight and see what we can do to assist with his eye. We are so thankful that Jeff has you all thinking of him.
Update: Wednesday, Nov 24 @ 8:00pm Jeff rested a lot today. The doctor mentioned that he must be very tired given all that he has been through. He said that ICU is not the easiest place to get rest, coma or not. The pressure on his left eye is less today, but the swelling and infection are about the same. They administered a steroid today hoping that will help. This is a tough infection. Please hope and pray for the best possible outcome. We really appreciate the wonderful get well messages for Jeff. Thanks again for checking on him today.
Update: Thursday, Nov 25, 4:20pm Dearest Jeff - Thanksgiving today is not the same without you, of course. We decided to wait to have your favorite pumpkin pie until you can join us. We missed Mom and Pam too. But we are thankful that they can be there with you. We said a big prayer together for you brother. Mercedes insisted that we all hold hands for you. Al Jr. said the heartfelt blessing. It is all about you Jeff! We love you more that you can possibly know. We are most thankful for you! We will be with you every step of the way. To all of you checking in today - A very Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families. We have read your messages together. We are thankful today and everyday for your well wishes! Our love is with you Jeff! Las Vegas Continued II
Update: Friday, Nov 26th @ 4:45 pm
The pressure on Jeff's left eye has reduced, which is great news. However, his eye is still very swollen. The doctors are watching the progress closely. Jeff sat up in his chair both yesterday and today. This seems to wear on him a bit, so he was resting today (not a lot of responsive movement). Mom and Pam want thank Chaplain Joe Freiburger and his wife for bringing them a delicious Thanksgiving dinner yesterday afternoon. It was so appreciated. Thanks so much for checking on Jeff today.
Update: Saturday, Nov 27 @ 3:40 pm Jeff is having a good, stable and restful day today. His eye pressure seems to be holding steady. The eye swelling may take a while to go down. Again, the doctors are happy with his progress. One doctor told Mom today, "This guy is here for a reason." There is no doubt about that one! To address a question from the 'get well' site - Jeff is still in a coma. He has a lot of healing to do and it is probably best done in this state. The nurses sit him up in a special chair in order to change his body position and to promote circulation. He is responsive, at times. by squeezing his hand or moving his legs upon request. Some think it may just be a random reaction and not a response to the person who is with him at the time. I choose to believe he is responding and knows who is with him. Update: Sunday, Nov 28, 7:30pm
Good news today, as the swelling in Jeff's left eye is reducing. We are so happy to see this - finally. He opened his right eye quite a bit today, as well. He was also moving his left arm. Given all of that, he is resting well this afternoon. A little progress everyday. We are so thankful for that. And we thank you so much for your prayers and positive thoughts on Thanksgiving and every day. It means so much to us . . . and to Jeff!
Update: Tuesday, Nov 30, 7:30 am He hit another milestone today. Jeff was safely transported by air ambulance from Las Vegas to Boise. He is home! Actually, he is at a special care facility. For now, as I am sure you can understand, we are only allowing family visits. Jeff needs to adjust to this travel and environmental change. We are hopeful that being home will even further his great healing progress. He is resting well tonight. We want to offer deep and sincere appreciation to the doctors, nurses, staff and University Medical Center in Las Vegas. Simply put, they performed both complex and routine procedures that kept Jeff alive. We will be forever grateful! Many of those doctors, nurses and staff have requested to be updated on Jeff’s progress – letters, pictures, etc. It seems that they became quite attached to our guy. Tonight Pam is reunited with their dog, Emma, after being away for one month. Sleep well in your own bed tonight, Pam. Mom and Bob drove back today and are safely home. Mercedes will sure be happy to have her Grandma back. Although this is such special day, Jeff still needs your prayers, positive thoughts and get well wishes. Thank you for checking on him today. Welcome home Jeff!
Update: Wednesday, Dec 1 @ 6:15 pm Jeff looks very good and is resting well today. The doctors have instructed that it necessary for Jeff to rest and heal now. Again, I must stress that only family members are allowed to visit Jeff for the near term. And even our visits must be limited. It seems that this is a important time for healing to take place. We hope that the injuries heal quickly, so that he may wake up soon. In addition to thinking of and praying for Jeff, could you also put Pam in your thoughts tomorrow. Pam and Jeff were married on December 2, 2006.
Update: Friday, December 3 @ 5:15pm Jeff is doing very well today. He is resting and healing. We feel very good about his progress. The family was able to meet with doctors and staff today to discuss the process and expectations. As you can imagine, Jeff's recovery will be a long process. The doctor mentioned to us that at this stage, we will see signs of improvement/progress every 3-7 days. Given this direction, we will be posting updates at the end of each week to keep you all informed. But please know that your well wishes are very important now. The family checks in daily and is supported by your comments. Please keep your prayers, healing thoughts, written comments coming, as they are so very appreciated. Thanks so much for thinking of Jeff today!
